Fire Fighters Without Borders
After seeing hundreds of sets of retired turnout gear go to landfills, CES decided to seek out an avenue to send refurbished turnout gear to the fire service in countries less fortunate than our own.

CES was introduced to Firefighters Without Borders Canada in April of 2009 and accepted as a Partner with Firefighters Without Borders (FWB) in early May. Having the facilities and the means to clean, inspect and repair retired turnout gear, CES provides FWB an opportunity to have donated gear in the best possible condition prior to sending to a designated project.

The CES Commitment
As a partner with Fire Fighters Without Borders, (FWB) CES is committed to encouraging fire departments to participate in the efforts of the organization in assisting the fire service in developing countries such as El Salvador and Paraguay. In addition CES is committed to making “in kind” financial contributions by actively collecting; cleaning, inspecting and repairing turnout gear being prepared for shipment to a project country.

An in-house fund has been established with CES making an initial $1000.00 in kind contribution for the cleaning, inspecting and repairing of turnout gear for FWB. In addition, for every set of turnout gear processed through the CES Gold Care program, CES will donate $10.00 in kind toward the service and repair of turnout gear donated to FFWB.

For every set of turnout gear processed through the CES Platinum Care program. CES will donate $20.00 in kind toward the service and repair of turnout gear donated to FFWB.

Advanced Technology
At the heart of the CES Cleaning Centre is the current model of the Esporta Wash System. This system has been independently tested and proven to be the most effective method for the cleaning, decontamination and sanitation of turnout gear available today. Not only does this system produce the best results for fire departments, it is the only wash system that is NFPA 1851 compliant for the cleaning of boots and helmets.

Due Diligence
CES realizes that in today’s service market, due diligence and risk management has tangible value. With compliance to regulations and standards and increased reality, departments need a relationship with an ISP that understands the requirements and are able to deliver value back to the department by limiting their liability exposure through diligent compliance.

Regulations and Standards
In British Columbia, WorksafeBC regulations are the driving force behind the care and maintenance of turnout gear. The relationship between Workers Compensation Board (WCB), the fire service organization, the manufacturer, the NFPA and Verified Independent Service Providers (ISP’s) looks something like this:

1. WCB requires fire departments to provide fire fighters with turnout gear suitable to protect them from job related hazards

2. WCB requires fire departments to maintain the turnout gear in good working order and in a sanitary condition, so that the turnout gear continues to provide the protection it was designed to provide

3. WCB requires fire departments to refer to the manufacturer’s instructions regarding the care and maintenance of the turnout gear

4. Manufacturers of turnout gear have adopted the Standard NFPA 1851, 2008 Edition as their instructions to fire departments for the care and maintenance of the turnout gear that they manufacture

5. NFPA 1851, 2008 Edition outlines the responsibility of the fire department to develop and implement a plan to maintain their turnout gear with the assistance of the manufacturer, a Verified ISP or both

Business Operations
Located in Kelowna B.C., CES operates and maintains a Cleaning and Repair facility dedicated to the servicing of turnout gear. Core elements of the CES operation include
